Role Summary

As Laboratory Manager, you will oversee the daily operations of Astral’s laboratories and workshops, ensuring the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and compliance. You will coordinate projects, manage laboratory staff, and maintain robust inventory systems. Your leadership will be key in supporting multidisciplinary teams working on fusion research, radioisotope production, and advanced manufacturing processes. Experience with radiation or radiochemistry is desirable.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and manage all laboratory operations, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and regulatory standards.

Supervise, train, and mentor laboratory staff, fostering a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement.  

Coordinate and oversee multiple research and development projects, ensuring timely delivery and effective resource allocation.

Maintain and optimise inventory systems for chemicals, consumables, and equipment; manage procurement and stock control.  

Ensure proper operation, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory equipment, including spectrometers, chromatographs, and radiation detectors.  

Develop, implement, and audit standard operating procedures (SOPs) and risk assessments.  

Oversee the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous and radioactive materials, where applicable.  

Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, suppliers, and project partners.

Support the preparation of technical reports, regulatory documentation, and compliance audits.

Stay updated on industry best practices and regulatory changes relevant to laboratory operations.

Qualifications & Skills

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemistry, Radiochemistry, Physics, Biological Sciences, Engineering or a related field.

Minimum 5 years’ experience managing laboratory operations in a wet lab environment.

Demonstrated experience in project coordination and team leadership.

Strong organisational skills, with proven ability to manage inventory and laboratory resources.

Experience with radiation safety, radiochemistry, or nuclear/medical sector laboratories is highly desirable.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Proficiency in laboratory management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
