About The Role
As a Radiochemistry Technician at Astral, you will play a vital role in supporting the development and operation of fusion-based neutron sources and radioisotope production. Working alongside scientists and engineers, you will assist in laboratory experiments, maintain equipment, and ensure the safe handling and disposal of radioactive materials. Your work will directly contribute to advancing the accessibility and affordability of cancer diagnostics and treatments in the UK and beyond.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in the preparation, execution, and documentation of experiments involving radioactive substances and fusion devices.
Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment such as spectrometers, chromatographs, and radiation detectors.
Support the development and refinement of methods for isolating and measuring radioactive materials.
Adhere to strict safety protocols and regulatory requirements (e.g., IRR-17) for the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
Monitor and record environmental and laboratory conditions, including radiation levels and waste management.
Manage laboratory stock, procure consumables, and ensure the availability of essential materials.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on radioisotope production and fusion research projects.
Assist with the assembly, testing, and maintenance of plasma fusion devices and related components.
Participate in training and continuous improvement initiatives to uphold best practices in laboratory safety and operations.
Contribute to the preparation of scientific reports and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
Travel to scientific meetings, conferences, or partner sites as required.
Qualifications & Skills
BSc, MSc or equivalent qualification in Chemistry, Radiochemistry, Physics, or a related scientific discipline.
Experience working in a laboratory environment, preferably with radioactive materials or within the nuclear/medical sector.
Strong attention to detail, organisational skills, and a commitment to safety.
Ability to follow standard operating procedures and regulatory guidelines.
Proficiency in using laboratory instruments and Microsoft Office Suite.
Effective communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Willingness to undertake manual handling and safety training.
