About The Role

Astral Systems is a fast-growing start-up that designs and manufactures compact fusion reactors as particle (neutron and protons) generators for fusion research and medical radioisotope generation. As a Fusion Research Laboratory Technician at Astral, you will engage in cutting-edge development of neutron sources based on fusion, with very near term real-world societal impact long before fusion power connects to the grid. Your work will be essential in directly and meaningfully contributing to Astral’s vision of accelerating advancements in the fusion industry for multiple applications. This is particularly in supporting the development of domestic generation of medical radioisotopes, as well as enhancing the accessibility and affordability of cancer diagnostics and treatments in the UK and worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

Conducting hands-on assembly, testing, day-to-day operation, and maintenance of fusion reactor devices and components (including gas cylinders, gas and vacuum systems, electronics, and high voltage components).

Keeping inventory of lab equipment and consumables, including timely purchases, regular maintenance, and identifying appropriate suppliers.

Designing and implementing upgrades for the reactor auxiliary parts.  

Using various coding languages and interfacing with LabVIEW software.

Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team on fusion fuel cycle research projects.

Occasional night shift for reactor operation

Documenting experimental procedures and results for research and data analysis.

Working with electrical devices and electronics to find and fix faults.

Sensors deployment within the facility.

Attend national and international conferences to disseminate information about Astral activities.

Adhering to stringent safety protocols in a laboratory environment, such as IRR-17 and manual handling (comprehensive training will be provided).

Creating risk assessments and standard operating procedures, including radioactive risk assessments.

Qualifications & Skills

Essential

BSc in Physical Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, Earth Sciences), or Engineering. Equivalent experiences in industry can be considered.

Willingness to work with sources of ionizing radiation.

Willingness to participate in night shifts.

At least 2 years of experience in a laboratory environment. Comprehensive training will be provided.

Experience in at least one of the following areas:

high voltage electricity

vacuum systems

gas systems (Swagelok or equivalent)

electronics  

Awareness of the risk and safety features within a laboratory environment.

Ability to work in a team environment.

Technical proficiency with laboratory equipment and diagnostics tools.

Ability to commute to Astral System’s site.

Ability to problem solve creatively and effectively by taking the initiative.

Desirable

MSc in Physical Sciences or Engineering.

Experience with CAD software.

Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) or other simulation tools (OpenMC, Matlab, COMSOL,…).

Experience with equipment design: from design to manufacture.

Experience in conducting experiments with high-energy particle physics equipment, such as particle accelerators, cyclotrons, or research reactors.

Experience working with radiation and the associated risk assessment processes.

Familiarity with the field of fusion energy and technology.

Familiarity with control software such as LabVIEW or others.
